Digital frequency synthesis from 5 MHz to 20 MHz using a PC application and a USB I/O board.
FSP
Module has been designed to facilitate computer-controlled frequency synthesis
experimentation in the Digital Control
lab or frequency-hopping experiments in the Communication
Circuits lab. At the heart of the module is a HF frequency synthesizer
circuit capable of synthesizing actual short-wave broadcast frequencies between
the 120m â 11m bands. The circuit is built around a VFO coupled to a digital
PLL circuit. A prescaled crystal oscillator and a divide-by-n circuit acting on
the VCO output provide the input to the PLL circuit to complete the synthesis loop.
This circuit is fundamentally very similar to the ones used in all present-day
frequency synthesized receivers and transmitters with digital tuners. An
application program running on the PC, along with a suitable digital output port,
provides the digital input to set the frequency.
The FSP
Control Panel application that comes with the board provides testing,
demonstration and basic experimentation features. For single-frequency
operation, one synthesized frequency can be set using the Control Panel. For
frequency-hopping applications, basic FHSS operation parameters (Channels, Hop
Set, Hop Sequence, and Hop Rate) can be set within the 5 MHzâ 20 MHz range.
