 TCT - Twisted-Pair Cable Tester

MSI Logic IC building blocks at work

The TCT Lab Module is a cable tester that has been designed to function as a tool for teaching and demonstrating combinational logic circuits. It is built using some common but fundamental MSI logic ICs. The circuit includes oscillators, counters, flip-flops, buffer drivers, XOR gates, OR gates, LEDs and a buzzer. Analysis of the design and operation of the circuit should give the students a very good, solid hands-on experience in using and designing with these basic logic building blocks.

TCT circuit can detect opens, shorts, crossed wires, and crossed pairs. A counter driver applies all 8-bit combinations to the cable and compares the input with the output. The counting is stopped if a problem is detected, and the wire in question is indicated on a separate set of LED indicators. A buzzer also provides audible alert when a fault is detected.

Three connector sockets for the RJ45 cables accommodate both straight thru and crossed patch cables.

 ECT - Experimentor Cable Tester

Twister-Pair patch cable tester

The ECT is a low-cost but very functional cable tester. It was designed as a no-frills tester kit that is suitable as a first-year project in soldering and construction techniques. The tester can be used to test Twisted-Pair patch cords for open or shorted wires, as well as identifying straight-thru and crossover configurations. Device requires 2 x AAA batteries to operate.
