UDB - USB Digital I/O Board
 |
24 Channels of Digital I/O on the USB Bus.
The
UDB Lab Module is a versatile platform for carrying out lab experiments involving digital control of external circuits and
devices through the USB network. The board provides 24 individually programmable
digital I/O channels for digital I/O, and is capable of fast USB transfers. It
comes complete with a control and test application program and a full Windows API
(Application Program Interface) for programming in VB or VC++.
The Lab Module has been designed as a teaching
tool through the use of other expansion/enhancement boards for I/O control experiments and projects. These accessory boards from Unistep are designed to work
with the UDB and the EDB modules to provide additional I/O and experimentation capabilities like analog I/O, optically-coupled inputs, relay outputs, etc. The board and the host API
can accommodate multiple boards on the same host computer.

EDB - Ethernet Digital I/O Board
|
 |
24 Channels of Digital I/O on the Ethernet network.
The EDB Board is a remote Ethernet I/O port that can be controlled from anywhere
on the Internet. It has a unique MAC address and can be assigned an IP address
on the local network. It has 24 digital I/O lines where each port can be configured as
input or output, and can be controlled and read individually.
The
TCP/IP stack and the web server firmware included with the module supports the
ARP, IP, ICMP, UDP, BOOTP and DHCP protocols. The 10 Base-T Ethernet interface
has a built-in RJ-45 connector and status lamps to show link condition and
activity. Utility software included with the module allows configuration of the
IP address and other advanced configurable parameters.
Capabilities provided by the on-board circuitry, TCP/IP stack in
the firmware, and the Windows programming API makes a rich, hands-on
learning environment in networking, data communication, and digital
control labs.

SPI - Serial Port Control Interface
|
 |
Control interface for experimentation with digital I/O, DC motor control, DC power control, stepper motor control and analog inputs.
SPI
module is a general-purpose I/O platform designed to support a wide range of
digital control experiments in the electronics lab. It provides various control
ports to the host PC through a serial port (or a USB port using the SUA Serial-to-USB adapter). These control ports
include digital outputs, digital inputs, analog inputs, analog reference
voltage input, PWM outputs and stepper motor control outputs.
The SPI Control
Panel (a Windows program running on the PC) provides direct control of the
output channels and display of input channels, and thus facilitates control
experimentation without any programming. For experiments and projects that
require programming, the advantage of using the serial ports on the PC is that for
most program development environments (like Visual Basic, Visual C, etc.) no
additional software is needed to use the serial ports. The MPU on-board the SPI
interprets commands from the
host PC to carry out complex operations using all I/O features.

AIO - Analog I/O Board
|
 |
Eight (8) ADC and two (2) DAC channels for the UDB and EDB Modules.
The Analog I/O Board is an accessory board that provides
an analog interface to the USB and Ethernet/Internet Digital I/O
Boards (UDB and EDB, respectively). The board consists of an 8 channel 10 bit Analog to
Digital Converter (MCP3008) and a 12 bit Digital to Analog Converter with 2
buffered outputs (MCP4922). Communication to the A/D and D/A Converters is via the SPI
interface of the I/O 24 module which is already implemented in the firmware.
The 8 channels of the A/D, 2 channels outputs of the D/A,
and all the VREF voltages are brought to screw-type terminal blocks
for easy access. These terminal blocks will accept
cables 0.5 – 2mm thick. The connection between the I/O24 board and the Analog
I/O board is via an IDC link cable supplied with the board.

IOC - I/O Combo Board
|
 |
I/O enhancement
for UDB and EDB boards with relay outputs and isolated digital inputs.
The board contains 4 Relay Outputs and 4 optically
isolated input channels. The relay outputs have both Normally Open (N/O) and
Normally Closed (N/C) contacts rated to 250V AC or 30V DC, both at 5 Amps. The
relays’ coils are powered by an external 12VDC power supply that is capable of
producing approx 350mA (about 80mA is required per active relay). The power
supply is not provided with the board, but the Lab Module (‘LM’) version of the
board has binding posts in addition to the a 3.5 mm DC plug for easy supplying of the 12
V external power. The relay coils are controlled using the on-board ULN2003
driver via the I/O ports of the board. Each of the output port channels has an
LED to indicate the relay output status.
The input channels are bridged wet contacts which
are electrically isolated from all other channels and the I/O24 module. Each
input channel also has a LED to indicate when a signal is present on the
channel.

FSP - Computer-Controlled Frequency Synthesizer |
 |
Digital frequency synthesis from 5 MHz to 20 MHz using a PC application and a USB I/O board.
FSP
Module has been designed to facilitate computer-controlled frequency synthesis
experimentation in the Digital Control
lab or frequency-hopping experiments in the Communication
Circuits lab. At the heart of the module is a HF frequency synthesizer
circuit capable of synthesizing actual short-wave broadcast frequencies between
the 120m – 11m bands. The circuit is built around a VFO coupled to a digital
PLL circuit. A prescaled crystal oscillator and a divide-by-n circuit acting on
the VCO output provide the input to the PLL circuit to complete the synthesis loop.
This circuit is fundamentally very similar to the ones used in all present-day
frequency synthesized receivers and transmitters with digital tuners. An
application program running on the PC, along with a suitable digital output port,
provides the digital input to set the frequency.
The FSP
Control Panel application that comes with the board provides testing,
demonstration and basic experimentation features. For single-frequency
operation, one synthesized frequency can be set using the Control Panel. For
frequency-hopping applications, basic FHSS operation parameters (Channels, Hop
Set, Hop Sequence, and Hop Rate) can be set within the 5 MHz– 20 MHz range.

TCT - Twisted-Pair Cable Tester |
 |
MSI Logic IC Building Blocks at Work
The
TCT Lab Module is a cable tester that has been designed to function as a tool
for teaching and demonstrating combinational logic circuits. It is built using some common but
fundamental MSI logic ICs. The circuit includes oscillators, counters,
flip-flops, buffer drivers, XOR gates, OR gates, LEDs and a buzzer. Analysis of
the design and operation of the circuit should give the students a very good,
solid hands-on experience in using and designing with these basic logic building
blocks.
TCT
circuit can detect opens, shorts, crossed wires, and crossed pairs. A counter
driver applies all 8-bit combinations to the cable and compares the input with
the output. The counting is stopped if a problem is detected, and the wire in
question is indicated on a separate set of LED indicators. A buzzer also
provides audible alert when a fault is detected.
Three connector sockets for the RJ45 cables accommodate both straight
thru and crossed patch cables.
