SPI - Serial Port Control Interface

Control interface for experimentation with digital I/O, DC motor control, DC power control, stepper motor control and analog inputs.

SPI module is a general-purpose I/O platform designed to support a wide range of digital control experiments in the electronics lab. It provides various control ports to the host PC through a serial port (or a USB port using the SUA Serial-to-USB adapter). These control ports include digital outputs, digital inputs, analog inputs, analog reference voltage input, PWM outputs and stepper motor control outputs.

The SPI Control Panel (a Windows program running on the PC) provides direct control of the output channels and display of input channels, and thus facilitates control experimentation without any programming. For experiments and projects that require programming, the advantage of using the serial ports on the PC is that for most program development environments (like Visual Basic, Visual C, etc.) no additional software is needed to use the serial ports. The MPU on-board the SPI interprets commands from the host PC to carry out complex operations using all I/O features.

 ICL - Infrared Communication Link

Full-Duplex Infrared modem with customizable operating parameters.
The ICL module is a full-duplex modem that can establish wireless asynchronous communication between two PC’s using infrared light beams. The circuit works with the existing PC serial ports and only requires an external DC power source and a serial cable to connect to the PC. On-board RS-232 transceiver circuit carries out the conversion of the RS-232 signals and makes the ICL circuit transparent to the application controlling the serial port.

The infrared link is established by FSK modulation of an IR LED and the reception by a PIN diode. Two separate pairs of frequencies are used to provide the full-duplex link.

The Challenge Module allows the FSK and PLL circuit sections to be redesigned for different operational parameters (transmit frequencies, frequency shift, capture range, etc.) by replacing the related passive components without requiring soldering/desoldering.

Software application provided with the board (ICL Control Panel) can be used to demonstrate basic async serial communication concepts, test the board, and allow the students to experiment with the system and the concepts.

 PLL - Phase-Locked Loop Module

Complete PLL system including crystal oscillator, pre-scaler, VCO, phase detector and divide-by-n circuit.

The PLL module is designed to function as a versatile platform that can be used to teach many aspects and applications of the basic PLL circuit. The module has an on-board reference oscillator, a pre-scaler, phase comparators, a VCO, a divide-by-n counter, a gated external input circuit, and a LP output filter. The complete circuit is fundamentally very similar to the ones used in all present-day frequency synthesized receivers and transmitters with digital tuners. Actual short-wave broadcast frequencies between the 120m – 11m bands can all be synthesized with the PLL circuit. With an external signal generator, PLL operation can be observed and analyzed in the entire 1 MHz - 20 MHZ band.

Board includes test points and configuration jumpers to reconfigure the circuit for different mode of operations and observe all relevant internal signals on the scope. The Challenge Module version allows redesigning the circuit for different operating parameters. The PLL design procedure supplied with the product can be used as a complete lab experiment where students can redesign the circuit, build it, and test the results in the lab. Level of the material (PLL Design and the User Manual) is suitable for both community colleges and universities.

 DFS - Digital Frequency Synthesizer

A complete digital frequency synthesizer for experimentation in the 1 MHz - 20 MHz frequency band.

A Short-Wave HF synthesizer circuit is at the heart of the DFS module. The circuit is built around a VFO section controlled by a crystal oscillator, a pre-scaling divider, and a PLL circuit. This circuit is fundamentally very similar to the ones used in all present-day frequency-synthesized receivers and transmitters with digital tuners. Actual Short-Wave broadcast frequencies between the 120m – 11m bands can all be synthesized with the DFS circuit.

DFS module is also available as a "Challenge" version where critical circuit parameters can be re-designed easily. Students can be assigned to redesign circuit to determine the values of passive components mounted on single-pin sockets that control key functional parameters. Background material needed for these design steps is provided in the user manual and the data sheets.

 FSP - Computer-Controlled Frequency Synthesizer

Digital frequency synthesis from 5 MHz to 20 MHz using a PC application and a USB I/O board.

FSP Module has been designed to facilitate computer-controlled frequency synthesis experimentation in the Digital Control lab or frequency-hopping experiments in the Communication Circuits lab. At the heart of the module is a HF frequency synthesizer circuit capable of synthesizing actual short-wave broadcast frequencies between the 120m – 11m bands. The circuit is built around a VFO coupled to a digital PLL circuit. A prescaled crystal oscillator and a divide-by-n circuit acting on the VCO output provide the input to the PLL circuit to complete the synthesis loop. This circuit is fundamentally very similar to the ones used in all present-day frequency synthesized receivers and transmitters with digital tuners. An application program running on the PC, along with a suitable digital output port, provides the digital input to set the frequency.

The FSP Control Panel application that comes with the board provides testing, demonstration and basic experimentation features. For single-frequency operation, one synthesized frequency can be set using the Control Panel. For frequency-hopping applications, basic FHSS operation parameters (Channels, Hop Set, Hop Sequence, and Hop Rate) can be set within the  5 MHz– 20 MHz range.
